So . . ., you've finally found the perfect place, lots of storage, nice size rooms, all the extra amenities. But, then you're told "no painting and no making holes in the walls"! You feel all your decorating plans going out the window. What can you do to make the space your own.

Well don't despair. There are many ways to get around the restrictions and limitations and I am here to share the ways I've overcome them over the past 18yrs.

I hope you enjoy my tips and will also share your own. I'll also be sharing some of my on going projects. Once again . . .

Decor Timing With A Lease!

I've been putting off really decorating my apartment for the past nine months as I knew I wanted to eventually move.  Well, things didn't turn out as planned and my lease was up!  Since I didn't find another place, I'm thus at the same residence for another year. *_*  It's just another challenge of living in a rental, timing!  If you plan on staying in one place for more than a year, it's worth the investment to make it your own space with paint and minor wall damage such as hanging shelves and pictures.  If you're renting on a short month to month basis, less than year, it would be more frugal to keep your decor simple with maybe a few large pictures (less holes in the walls); colorful accessories, and textures.  Though I have been here for 2 1/2yrs, this is the route I've taken in my kitchen; especially on the back wall.  It went from nothing on the wall but this empty mini curio cabinet.  I know, really dull huh.  But now it looks like this . . .

It's still not much but at least it adds some color and patterns.  I have some french country wallpaper I've been saving for my next place with the same color scheme.  Painting kitchens is a lot of taping and cutting in so I didn't want to paint knowing I plan on leaving.  It started with the white mini cabinet and this is how it was changed:  I first painted the inside with a deep yellow craft paint by Plaid.

Then I painted the outside with a soft beige color oops paint from Home Depot.  Though I loved the combo of beige and yellow as you can see it above on the inside of the doors, it seemed like something was missing.  So I did some highlighting of the details with Rustoleum latex flat paint in black, but then it was a bit harsh!   (Sorry I didn't take pictures in between)  Next, I did a wash and rub technique using a paper towel using a burnt sienna Satin Finish Perm Enamel from Delta CeramDecor for tiles, glass, and ceramic.

I love the rustic effect it created and the black highlighting the details is just enough without being overbearing.

Then came a few collectibles and adding roosters to that side of the kitchen.

Well, it will do for another year.  I know these pictures aren't staged, but this is real life and not a magazine shoot.  Thus, the clean dishes in the rack. -_^

Come Monday, I will share the finished dresser plus a mirror!  Yep, I finally finished it after constantly adding to it until I was satisfied.  I'm really, really happy with the final results.  Until then, hope your weekend is going well.

  1. I love the lines and it's a great update for your space. Sorry you have to stay another year, but you have another year to make sure all your changes happen on schedule! (especially changing your mailing address, that's my least favorite part)

And thank you for featuring me! I've been so busy I didn't get a chance to thank you!

    1. Hi Trudy,
It helped to add color to an empty space. That's how I looked at it too, . . . "have another year to make sure all your changes happen". I figure by the time I move next year, all of my furniture should be made over and I will have gotten rid of the excess also.

Your welcome about the feature. I'm surprised at how much I miss the party already. Have a good week.
